You don't like that your coworker used me on that note about stealing her yogurt from the break room fridge? You don't like that I'm all over your sister-in-law's blog? You don't like that I'm on the sign for that new Thai place? You think I'm pedestrian and tacky? Guess the fuck what, Picasso. We don't all have seventy-three weights of stick-up-my-ass Helvetica sitting on our seventeen-inch MacBook Pros. Sorry the entire world can't all be done in stark Eurotrash Swiss type. Sorry some people like to have fun. Sorry I'm standing in the way of your minimalist Bauhaus-esque fascist snoozefest. Maybe sometime you should take off your black turtleneck, stop compulsively adjusting your Tumblr theme, and lighten the fuck up for once.

People love me. Why? Because I'm fun. I'm the life of the party. I bring levity to any situation. Need to soften the blow of a harsh message about restroom etiquette? SLAM. There I am. Need to spice up the directions to your graduation party? WHAM. There again. Need to convey your fun-loving, approachable nature on your business' website? SMACK. Like daffodils in motherfucking spring.

When people need to kick back, have fun, and party, I will be there, unlike your pathetic fonts. While Gotham is at the science fair, I'm banging the prom queen behind the woodshop. While Avenir is practicing the clarinet, I'm shredding "Reign In Blood" on my double-necked Stratocaster. While Univers is refilling his allergy prescriptions, I'm racing my tricked-out, nitrous-laden Honda Civic against Tokyo gangsters who'll kill me if I don't cross the finish line first. I am a sans serif Superman and my only kryptonite is pretentious buzzkills like you.

It doesn't even matter what you think. You know why, jagoff? Cause I'm famous. I am on every major operating system since Microsoft fucking Bob. I'm in your signs. I'm in your browsers. I'm in your instant messengers. I'm not just a font. I am a force of motherfucking nature and I will not rest until every uptight armchair typographer cock-hat like you is surrounded by my lovable, comic-book inspired, sans-serif badassery.

Ironic design logo fail

I was walking by a new store in the mall today and saw their sign. How ironic - a store called "by Design," much less having the word 'design' in it, was written in Comic Sans.

And yes, their logo (at the bottom of the glass window on the right side) is written in Comic Sans too.

There are always logo/branding redesigns, but Aol.'s new identity is more than just an update:

The biggest changes, typographically, are the use of title case, and the addition of a period (to suggest “confidence, completeness [...] that AOL is the place to go for the best content online, period”). Of course, the new logo is also in white, so as to "reveal" itself from a variety of different backgrounds. Check out this video to see what that means:

Just came across an article on typography purists, written by Alice Rawsthorn in the Design section of the New York Times. A highlight:

“I think sometimes that being overly type-sensitive is like an allergy,” said Michael Bierut, a partner in the Pentagram design group in New York. “My font nerdiness makes me have bad reactions to things that spoil otherwise pleasant moments.”

Reminds me of the whole Ikea catalog controversy back in August. The article goes on to discuss historically inaccurate use of fonts. For example:

Take “Titanic,” in which the numbers on the dials of the ship’s pressure gauges use Helvetica, a font designed in 1957, some 45 years after the real “Titanic” sank. Helvetica was also miscast in “Good Night and Good Luck,” which takes place in the early 1950s.

Wow. Getting upset with that is beyond even me!

My friend just started working at a dance studio so I drafted up a flyer for her Friday night salsa class. She loved it. So did the studio.

Then, they wanted to change the logo font.

...to Comic Sans.

Apparently that's how their logo looks and they want to stay consistent. Consistently fail.

I would continue to rant... but you all can feel my pain, I imagine.

Gah. These took me forever. I only did 30... but the gluing, cutting, printing, stamping, and numerous trips to Paper-Source consumed most of my time.

I did a little blue & gold color theme... lined the envelopes with the same paper I used for the outside of the card. Used a gold stamp for the inside of the card and outside of the envelope, printed the text on textured off-white paper, navy blue ribbon to keep it closed, used some UCB seals to close the envelope

Many hours over lots of weekends... but finalllllyyyy... I can send them off.

From Live Science, here’s an interesting summary by Clara Moskowitz of recent research suggesting that “Smiles Predict Marriage Success.” Here are some excerpts.

If you want to know whether your marriage will survive, look at your spouse’s yearbook photos.

Psychologists have found that how much people smile in old photographs can predict their later success in marriage.

In one test, the researchers looked at people’s college yearbook photos, and rated their smile intensity from 1 to 10. None of the people who fell within the top 10 percent of smile strength had divorced, while within the bottom 10 percent of smilers, almost one in four had had a marriage that ended, the researchers say. (Scoring was based on the stretch in two muscles: one that pulls up on the mouth, and one that creates wrinkles around the eyes.)

In a second trial, the research team asked people over age 65 to provide photos from their childhood (the average age in the pictures was 10 years old). The researchers scored each person’s smile, and found that only 11 percent of the biggest smilers had been divorced, while 31 percent of the frowners had experienced a broken marriage.

Overall, the results indicate that people who frown in photos are five times more likely to get a divorce than people who smile.

While the connection is striking, the researchers stress that they can’t conclude anything about the cause of the correlation.

“Maybe smiling represents a positive disposition towards life,” said study leader Matthew Hertenstein, a psychologist at DePauw University in Indiana. “Or maybe smiling people attract other happier people, and the combination may lead to a greater likelihood of a long-lasting marriage. We don’t really know for sure what’s causing it.”

Hertenstein said he has considered other explanations, such as the possibility that people who smile more often tend to attract more friends, and a larger support network makes it easier to keep a marriage healthy. Or it could be that people who smile when a photographer tells them to are more likely to have obedient personalities, which could make marriage easier.

The results of the study fit into a larger pattern of research that has found many personality characteristics can be determined from very thin slices of behavior. Basically, we often reveal ourselves in the most subtle, simple ways.

#5 on the Top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes is a stunt pulled in 1977 by the British newspaper The Guardian.

The newspaper published a special seven-page supplement devoted to San Serriffe, a small republic said to consist of several semi-colon-shaped islands located in the Indian Ocean. A series of articles affectionately described the geography and culture of this obscure nation. Its two main islands were named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Its capital was Bodoni, and its leader was General Pica. The Guardian's phones rang all day as readers sought more information about the idyllic holiday spot. Only a few noticed that everything about the island was named after printer's terminology. The success of this hoax is widely credited with launching the enthusiasm for April Foolery that gripped the British tabloids in subsequent decades.

"General Pica" is my favorite... ahahahaa. And Bodoni is the capital!

*"Typolution": SO COOL. Typographic animation film with an environmental theme. Set to the song "Nostrand" by Ratatat.

*"Conscious": Undergrad project using motion graphics portraying the unconscious mind drifting into a dream state and finally coming to awareness within it. (i.e., really cool)

*"Flickermood": Flickermood is a fluid motion graphics piece containing lots of sweetly animated contortions of type synced to "Sonar Kollectiv," a cool recycled retro funktrack by Forss. Want more? See the full-length video here.

*"Evolution of Life in 60 Seconds": Kind of trippy. A video experiment in scale, condensing 4.6 billion years of history into a minute.

*"Universal Declaration of Human Rights": It's powerful to see this document visualized with type and other 2D animation. It was made for the Human Rights Action Center.

*There are also many, many examples of kinetic typography set to songs and movie scenes. This "Pulp Fiction" scene is one of the most popular -- but search any popular musical artist or movie, and there's a good chance someone (often a student) has made a film :)

So, I've been perusing font forums today and accidentally happened upon a couple of free fonts, which then turned into lots of free fonts. A few of the ones I ended up downloading:

(1) Museo: it started with the letter "u"... a fun sans serif that comes in five weights, three of which are free. It was voted one of iLT's (I Love Typography blog's) top 10 fonts of '08.

(3) Lavoisier: a new open source font.

(4) MEgalopolis Extra: from Frenchman Jack Usine, voted one of the top 10 fonts of 2008 by iLT (I Love Typography blog). "Beautiful, big, and strong... abracadabratesque (this adjective should be used more often)... extraordinary, prestigious, dazzling, phenomenal, colossal, incredible... and, with that, modest."

(2) Badaboom: a new "fun font" discovery, sort of a cousin of AHJ Keller, which we've been using on the awesome Senior Portraits flyers. Urbanfonts.com has a lot of free fonts, though some of them are silly/over-the-top.P.S. It's not free, but I'm really digging Hannah. It reminds me that Amy needs to make a font out of her handwriting!P.P.S. Want more? Check out the Top 10 Fonts of '08. It's really of list of top 10 lists = soooo many fonts to discover.
P.P.P.S. A simple Google search turns up lots of free font websites. I tend to prefer dafont.com but simplythebest.net and urbanfonts.com are still better organized than most. Have a favorite font site/open source font? Spread the love!

Color of the Year

Pantone, the authority on Color, officially named PANTONE 14-0848 Mimosa as the color of the year for 2009, named for the bright flowers of the mimosa tree: "In a time of economic uncertainty and political change, optimism is paramount and no other color expresses hope and reassurance more than yellow ... The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance ... Mimosa also speaks to enlightenment, as it is a hue that sparks imagination and innovation." Kinda looks like Cal's gold, eh?

I hope everyone is having an awesome winter break doing pretty much nothing and/or relaxing. You guys all deserve it!

But instead of showing you a bunch of fonts, it will display your fonts and your choice of text. So if you ever wondered what would be a good font for say, "Hella Whimsical," you'd type that in where it reads "flipping typical" and you'll see it all come out in the variety of fonts they already have. You can also type above it (in the black) the name of a font on your computer and it will load the image below. Pretty nifty, huh?

The Revival: Vermonster

In light of the challenges I'm taking on for the next couple (27?) days, I thought this may be a prime opportunity to revive Hella Whimsical.

If you attended last night's General Meeting, you would have been greeted at the door with an invitation to have ice cream. I purchased (but will not be paying for) a Vermonster (wiki) from Ben & Jerry's to share with all those who attended.

The reason for it all:

I'm participating in the 30 Day Secret hosted by my boyfriend. Each day, I receive a task or challenge to perform and upon completion of each one, I comment with a solution to the task. With each successful attempt/completion, I receive a share of the secret. More information can be found here. As my first challenge, I had to share a Vermonster with 20 friends and since you are all my friends, =) yearbook general meeting was the best opportunity for it. As per details of the challenge, photos of the Vermonster sharing can be found here. However, I was unable to get 20 of you to have some of the ice cream (for some very good reasons, i.e. lactose intolerant, allergic to nuts, it looked really gross at the end) so I need you to pester my boyfriend into giving me the share of the secret for that day. 19 out of 20 is pretty close, don't you agree? He would also like suggestions for future challenges. My housemates have already suggested challenges such as "Take housemates to Trader Joe's/Costco/dinner, etc." You can find his contact information here.

But back to yearbook! The purpose of this blog is really to share ideas, thoughts, websites, upcoming events and interesting stories that does not necessary have to do with yearbook per se, but you may find interesting for a fellow yearbooker. Delayed Summer Update

We have officially received all our proofs since deadline two minus the senior section and are dutifully working getting them all back to the plant. Checking on last year's progress: they got the entire book in by August 13th.

Now the question is: can we do the same???

I totally think so. =) We will definitely need help though. If anyone's free and in the Berkeley area at the moment and want to help us out, please do! Shoot Caitlin an email and she'll update you on the latest work progress.

It's that time of the semester. You're loaded up with enough course readers/textbooks/sample exams to keep you busy all week; Diet Coke to hopefully keep you up; and an alarm clock just in case it doesn't; but, let's be honest, WAY TOO MANY opportunities to procrastinate: Yearbook e-mails; Daily Cal crosswords; Facebook; AnonCon (the comeback); heck, even The Clog are all beckoning you... but wait, there's more! One can't forget the streakers, who strutted their stuff tonight in the Main Stacks. Justin and I took a brief break from "studying" (or what should have been) to witness the event first-hand:

Highlight of my day: Justin and Aryn teaching Tiffany and me the electric slide and then all of us line dancing in the Pub Center. Apparently I'm a lot more uncoordinated than I thought. Tiffany on the other hand picked it up in a second. Maybe the next time all of us are in the office we can show off our moves (or lack thereof on my end).

operation embarrass pihulic

so last night, in the spirit of april fools, i really wanted to embarrass mr. pihulic, so i went into the photo meeting at 7:45pm and gave him a kiss on the cheek. i even wore lipstick in hopes that the presence of my love would linger throughout the rest of the night.

unfortunately, he smeared off the evidence immediately after and later told me that he wasn't embarrassed at all. so in one of the following photo meetings, either this week or the following, i am going to show up before 8pm and plant another big one.

and embarrass him.

please be there to witness the event, and as photographers, you should cheer and capture the moment.
